After graduating from college, he began his professional wrestling career. During his college wrestling career, he competed in the 174-pound weight class as an amateur wrestler. Following successive loses in the same competition in 2004 and 2005, he won the National Collegiate Athletic Association Championship match in 2006 and 2007. He still holds the NCAA single-season pin record.
