Benedict Timothy Carlton Cumberbatch was born in Hammersmith, London, England, on July 19, 1976, and grew up in an acting household. Cumberbatch began attending boarding schools when he was eight years old, first at Brambletye School in West Sussex. On an Arts scholarship, he went on to the prestigious Harrow School, where he was part in numerous Shakespearean productions. When he was 12, he made his acting debut in “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” Before starting college, Cumberbatch volunteered as an English teacher at a Tibetan monastery in India.
