He was signed as an international free agent from the Dominican Prospect League by the Chicago White Sox in 2015. Despite his lack of professional experience, the White Sox traded him and Erik Johnson to the Padres on June 4, 2016, for James Shields.
In 2016, he split his time between the Arizona League Padres and the Tri-City Dust Devils of the Class A-Short Season Northwest League. In 2017, he appeared in 117 games for the Midwest League’s Class A Fort Wayne TinCaps and 14 games for the San Antonio Missions.
