Hanna took over as director of the Columbus Zoo in 1978, transforming it from a small, run-down facility to a nationally recognized zoological park. This individual increased zoo attendance by delivering a variety of educational programs and staging entertaining events.

He also developed relationships with local business leaders in order to raise funds for the construction of larger, more natural habitats to replace the zoo’s outdated cage-like animal enclosures. He also agreed to appear on Good Morning America to raise public awareness of the zoo following the birth of twin gorillas there in 1983.

This led to him regularly appearing on Late Night with David Letterman and Larry King Live, as well as a stint as a CNN correspondent.
