Jennifer Mulhern Granholm was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, on February 5, 1959. She moved to California with her parents, Victor Ivar Granholm and Shirley Alfreda, when she was four years old. She grew up in the California cities of Anaheim, San Jose, and San Carlos. Granholm attended Ida Price Jr. High and Del Mar High School before graduating from San Carlos High School in 1977, when she won the Miss San Carlos Excellence Expo. She worked as a local escort at Universal Studios in 1978 and participated on The Dating Game as a young adult. She then worked as a client assistant at the Los Angeles Times and as the only female local area specialist at Marine World Africa USA in Redwood City, where she directed boats with up to 25 people.
