The Kylian Mbappe transfer saga came to an end on Saturday, with confirmation that the Paris Saint-Germain striker has turned down a move to Real Madrid in favor of extending his contract with the Ligue 1 club for another three years.

According to ESPN, PSG turned down a series of bids from Real Madrid for Mbappe, the most recent of which was worth up to €200 million, and the Spanish giants were confident that they would finally land their long-sought target on a free transfer this summer, with his contract set to expire on June 30.

Mbappe said in a statement,

“I would like to announce that I have opted to extend my contract at Paris Saint-Germain, and of course I am happy.”

“I am certain that here I can continue to develop at a club that provides everything I need to compete at the top level, and I am also thrilled to be able to play in France, where I was born, raised, and established my name.”

“I’d like to express my gratitude to President Nasser Al-Khelaifi for his trust, patience, and understanding.” I’d also like to express my gratitude to everyone of Paris Saint-fans, Germain’s both in France and around the world, for their continued support, particularly in recent months. We’ll produce magic in Paris together, side by side and ambitious.”

Earlier on Saturday, ESPN reported that Mbappe had personally phoned Madrid president Florentino Perez, as well as PSG manager Mauricio Pochettino and his teammates, to inform them of his choice.

According to sources, PSG sporting director Leonardo may quit the club as a result of the agreement, with Mbappe preferring former Monaco and Lille executive Luis Campos as a replacement, while Pochettino’s future is also uncertain.

LaLiga made a statement shortly before Mbappe’s signing was officially confirmed, stating that it will be pursuing legal action against PSG over the deal.

“To continue to safeguard the economic environment of European football and its viability, LaLiga will submit a protest against PSG with UEFA, the French administrative and fiscal authorities, and European Union authorities,” the statement continued.

“This type of arrangement threatens European football’s economic stability, putting hundreds of thousands of jobs and the sport’s credibility at danger,” the statement said. “It is scandalous that a club like PSG can reach such an agreement while clubs that could afford to hire the player without jeopardizing their wage bill are unable to do so…. PSG is making an impossible investment, given its unacceptable wage bill and large financial losses in previous seasons, and it is breaking current UEFA and French economic control rules.”

PSG acquired Mbappe from AS Monaco in 2017, paying a world-record fee of €180 million for a teenager.

He went on to score 168 goals for the club in five years, becoming him the club’s second-highest goal scorer behind Edinson Cavani.

Mbappe has four Ligue 1 titles with PSG and has been named France’s player of the year three times, including this season, when his 25 goals and 17 assists led PSG to the crown.

Real Madrid, whom he supported as a child and came close to joining in 2017, has pursued him during that time.

Despite the possibility of him leaving for free at the end of his contract, which had only 12 months left, the LaLiga club had a series of proposals for Mbappe rejected in August 2021.

Throughout the season, Madrid maintained communication with Mbappe’s representation, believing that the youngster had given them his word that he would come this summer.

PSG, on the other hand, never lost up on convincing him to stay, and with the season’s finish coming this week, both clubs were unsure about Mbappe’s final decision.

According to ESPN, Madrid is “pessimistic” about their chances of closing a deal, as well as “nervousness and bewilderment” about the player’s public behavior and lack of contact.

Madrid’s recent recruitment strategy has revolved around their pursuit of Mbappe, and they must now prepare for life without him. Meanwhile, PSG is attempting to assemble a team around the forward in order to break their Champions League drought.

“Kylian’s commitment to PSG is an incredible milestone in our Club’s history, and a joyful moment for our fans all around the world,” stated club president Al-Khelaifi.
